I see my dealing with busy season issues as derivative exercises in presence and mindfulness—being present wherever you are and listening to what your body is telling you. By focusing your energy on what you can do to make progress forward, rather than worrying about the past (which you can’t do anything about), you can put your energy to good use in helping you to reach your goals.
I journaled to vent out both my frustrations and those that others had shared with me, so that I wouldn’t hold them inside and have risk of them suddenly lashing out if triggered. I also meditated regularly so that I could figure out how I was feeling, recognize both the productive and non-productive thoughts, and figure out what I needed to let go of (possibly by journaling) and what I needed to do to help move toward a resolution. Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to speak at the Washington Society of CPAs’ (WSCPA) Pacific Tax Institute about the changes coming to the accounting profession with big data, robotic process automation, and artificial intelligence technologies. These technologies have reached a point of practical maturity for use in supporting tax services. It’s always interesting … Continue reading
Last week Monday, I spoke at BKR International’s 2018 International Meeting. This was a truly international meeting with representatives from firms in over 48 countries around the world, all gathered in Shanghai, China. The meeting’s theme was “embracing transformation” and I was pleased to speak on how emerging technologies are enhancing the accounting profession rather … Continue reading

I’ve always loved getting to explore new places. I think I inherited the gene from my grandmother who despite her humble upbringing in Wahiawa, Hawaii, spent a lot of time reading about different cultures and history, and traveled to see the world on a very modest budget. I am somewhat similar. I don’t believe in … Continue reading
My conference season this year began with a visit to the Arkansas Society of CPAs‘s Emerging Leaders “Catfish and CPE” event. It was fun for me to share the story of how I went from “Donny Shimamoto” to “donnyitk”, as I taught over 40 emerging leaders in Little Rock, AR how to leverage the CPA … Continue reading
I originally started this blog 6 years ago to start building my personal brand and to help promote the mindset change that was needed to make our world a better place. I thought that by taking a broad approach to promoting the values and philosophies that I could inspire the next generation of business professionals … Continue reading
Last year I discovered an interesting faction of the American Accounting Association that was focused on Big Data. When Big Data first came out, I characterized it just the newest buzz word for business intelligence. Attending last year’s Accounting IS Big Data conference really opened my eyes to the potential to leverage Big Data and … Continue reading
